The Diamond Eye by Kate Quinn: 'I waited for Mila to pull the trigger'

Updated: May 15, 2022

I have to admit that I am not usually a reader of historical #fiction but, being a visual person, was drawn to read this #book by the beautiful cover. I learned, after I was part way through this book, that Kate Quinn has been writing about women who have been heroic during WWII in several wonderful books already - The Alice Network, The Huntress and The Rose Code. Happily, I now have a few more books to my 'must read' list.

Based on the life of Lyudmila Pavlichenko, known as Mila in the book, it follows her experiences from being a #historical library student all the way until she became a Russian sniper in WWII who was known - and feared - as Lady Death.

When the war was declared, she joined the army. She’s a wonderful lead character, who is strong, feisty, and determined. Quinn spends a lot of time developing all the aspects of her life as a mother and woman in the military, where not everyone thinks she should be the face of the Russian soldier. She faces a great deal of adversity on all fronts and there’s plenty of action, danger and even a little mystery woven into the story - at times, it felt like I was waiting for Mila to pull the trigger! I enjoyed the read.
