A Slow Fire Burning by Paula Hawkins: 'So much more than a fast-paced whodunit!'

BLURB via AMAZON

When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him. Laura is the troubled one-night-stand last seen in the victim’s home. Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member. And Miriam is the nosy neighbor clearly keeping secrets from the police. Three women with separate connections to the victim. Three women who are – for different reasons – simmering with resentment. Who are, whether they know it or not, burning to right the wrongs done to them. When it comes to revenge, even good people might be capable of terrible deeds. How far might any one of them go to find peace? How long can secrets smolder before they explode into flame?

MY THOUGHTS

If you’re looking for a gripping, suspenseful, fast-paced whodunnit, this is not the book for you, but I imagine you would have guessed that by the title alone. It is told by multiple POVs over different timelines and is a story of heartbreak, unconditional love, dysfunctional pasts, trauma, and revenge. There is the whodunit factor in the storyline, but the main point of the story is to show that everyone has secrets. Like a classic mystery film, all the characters have a past that has shaped them into who they are and none are innocent, with that 'picket-fence perfect' life.

It is their broken lives and flawed characters that allow the reader to become so emotionally attached to them. The author does a brilliant job of having their narrative be affected by these flaws, adding an unreliability to their account of events which only adds to the depth of the story. A brilliant piece of impeccable writing to make the thriller an extra enjoyable read that will make you think after you put it down.
